During the winter, my skin and lips are the first places I start to see wear and tear. Dull, dry, lackluster, and chapped…a whole lot of adjectives that are not cute and not the business!
I’m a self-proclaimed product junkie, so I’ve tried many popular items and trends to help remedy the problem, but it turns out that the perfect solution was in my kitchen!
If your skin and lips are also in need of a little TLC, whip up this yummy, peppermint sugar lip scrub in just 5 minutes and kiss chapped, rough lips goodbye—for good!
DIY Holiday Peppermint Sugar Lip Scrub
- Sugar (white, brown, granulated, or coconut) 2 Tbsp
- Olive oil (coconut oil or avocado oil) 1 Tbsp
- Flavored extract (peppermint, vanilla, almond, lemon, or coconut) 1 tsp
Alternate ingredients you could include in your own homemade sugar lip scrub: honey, essential oils, cinnamon
Prep time: 5 minutes
Combine all your ingredients into a small ramekin or glass container. An old lip gloss or eye creme jar works great for this scrub. Just remove any old product left over and reuse the container for your new lip scrub. Mix together the ingredients until the sugar has soaked up all of the oil and flavored extract. You don’t want the sugar to be too lumpy or crumbly. The consistency of your lip scrub should be slightly goopy. If you need to add more oil, you can. (If you choose to use coconut oil, be aware that this oil is not liquid at room temperature and may not melt all the way in your scrub.) This recipe isn’t exact, so feel free to eyeball some measurements. You can also add more extract if you want your peppermint sugar lip scrub to be more fragrant. The smell of this lip scrub is probably my favorite part—it’s literally heavenly, let me tell you.
You’ll know if you added too much oil because the scrub will become too runny. If this happens, simply add in a bit more sugar until you have the consistency you like.
My lip scrub includes peppermint flavoring, olive oil + sugar.
I love how versatile this recipe is—you don’t have to use the same flavors or ingredients that I chose. There are so many creative variations you could come up with, and some of my favorites include:
- lavender essential oil + honey (in place of extract)
- coconut oil + chocolate extract
- lemon extract + vanilla extract + coconut oil
I like to keep a jar of this lip scrub on my bathroom sink to use after I wash my face at night as part of my daily self care routine. It’s just that little bit extra oomph that makes me feel indulgent and helps my self care routine feel just a lil’ more special. I scoop some onto my finger and gently rub the mixture onto my lips in a circular motion, focusing mostly on the bottom lip. Once I’m satisfied that my lips are smoother and any dead skin is removed, I rinse with warm water, and pat my lips dry. There’s always a small amount of oil left on my lips which insures they remain moisturized longer. I like using this lip scrub before I apply any makeup too—it helps any lip product I use go on much more smoothly and last a little longer.
This scrub could also be used as a full body or foot scrub, too; your pedicure will never be the same! I wouldn’t recommend using this as a facial scrub though, as the sugar would be too abrasive. You can keep a fresh batch of this lip scrub for about a week, although it may last even longer if kept refrigerated.
I love easy DIY projects that use items you normally have around the house. This sugar scrub is one of my favorites because it’s so easy to make, and it takes the place of commercial lip products that cost twice as much.
Searching for that last perfect gift for a friend or family member? This sugar scrub would be great as a stocking stuffer. You could also create several sugar scrubs and give them out to friends at work or all your girlfriends. Dress up some small mason jars (with your new lip scrub inside) with festive holiday ribbon and name cards for a bohemian twist on this yummy, affordable gift idea. Okay, okay…I can’t take all the credit. Pinterest may have helped me out on that last part. 😉
